Simple Machine Science for Kids: Launching Ping Pong Ball Snowmen by Buggy and Buddy
Whenever I invite my kids to participate in science experiments, my main goal is NOT to make sure they master a set concept, but simply to allow them to explore the activity in their own way. Giving this freedom to children inspires them to make predictions and critically think about the world around them in a pressure-free setting.
We don’t really get snow in our neck of the woods so we have to create our own imaginary snow activities~ like our indoor snowy toy car ramp, or like this activity- launching ping pong ball snowmen!
Materials for Launching Ping Pong Ball Snowmen
- Ping pong balls (Optional: Draw snowmen faces on the ping pong balls with Sharpiesto make this science activity winter themed!)
- Wooden yardstick
- Something to use as a fulcrum (Examples: coffee can, large wooden toy block, a log, or a brick )
- Small plastic cup
- Strong tape (like packing tape or masking tape)
- An open space to do the activity (like your yard or a nearby park)
- Optional: Paper and pencil for science journaling
1. Tape a plastic cup to one end of the yardstick. (We started off with just a few pieces of tape, but soon realized we needed to add quite a bit more to keep the cup from flying off the yardstick. Really tape that baby down with some strong tape.)
2. Grab your ping pong ball snowmen, your yardstick (with cup attached) and whatever you’re using as the fulcrum (in our case a coffee can) and head outside. Find an open space (like your yard) to set up your activity.
2. Place the yardstick over the coffee can (or whatever item you’ve found to use as the fulcrum).
3. Put a ping pong ball snowman into the cup.
4. Give the snowman a little pep talk before his launch.
4. Push down on the opposite end of the yardstick quickly (with either your hand or foot) and observe what happens to the ping pong ball.
5. Allow plenty of time for children to explore launching the ping pong balls. Optional: Encourage children to record what they are noticing in their science journals. Younger children can illustrate what is happening with simple pictures.
6. Depending on the age and interest of your child, introduce the terms lever and fulcrum. (A lever is basically a stick or rod that uses a pivot point or fulcrum to move something. In this case the yardstick is the lever, the coffee can is the fulcrum, and the lever is moving the ping pong ball.)
7. Invite your child to observe what happens to the ping pong ball when changing the position of the fulcrum. Older children can use the markings on the yardstick to record the location of the fulcrum in their science journal and how each location affects the distance the ping pong ball travels.
This activity can be a great learning experience for any age! Theo at 2 years old had a blast launching his ping pong ball snowman! He felt proud being able to set up the activity on his own and gained experience with cause and effect.
Lucy, age 5, was determined to see how she could set the lever up to get the ball to go the furthest by changing the location of the fulcrum after each launch. And she was very excited to find out what would happen when she launched lots of snowmen at once. She made all kinds of predictions as she explored our lever activity!
Want to Go Even Further?
Related activities to extend the learning for various ages.
- Play on a seesaw at your local playground. How is the seesaw the same and different as your ball launching lever? Do you think the seesaw is a lever? Why or why not?
- Where do you see levers being used in your everyday life? (Some examples: scissors, seesaw, pliers)
- Go online or to the library and research first class, second class, and third class levers.
- Design and build a smaller version of the lever we made today.

Ugly Sweater Party Ideas: Gluten Free Options December 16 2013
Who said an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party needs gluten? Preparing for our upcoming chat with Elizabeth Hasselbeck, I realized we have something in common, we're both gluten free - so to help anyone else out there that happens to be looking for a few GF holiday meals, I wanted to provide a few great resources:
Host a Holiday Party on a Budget December 10 2013
Holiday party ideas on a budget
It’s time to celebrate the holidays with friends and family.
No matter what your style, you can throw a winter celebration that fits. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money. Here are some ideas.
* Play two truths and a lie, holiday edition. Talk about two awesome or awful gifts you’ve actually received and include a third that you never got. The goal is to see if your friends can figure out the two you actually received.
* Play Christmas Minute to Win It. The idea of the game, based on the NBC television show, is to create quick but challenging activities for one another — like building a pyramid out of 28 green Solo cups so it looks like a Christmas tree, or use empty wrapping paper tubes as a straw to pick up and transport ping pong balls — all in just one minute. You can compete as teams or one-on-one. Minute to Win It is a fun way to get laughs out of everyone. And it keeps everyone busy.
* Play charades based on Christmas carols. Act out a specific song and see who can guess which one it is
New Year’s Eve parties
* Play games similar to the ones above but with New Year’s themes. Count down the hours until midnight by coming up with activities, writing them on small pieces of paper and placing the suggestions inside balloons. Inflate the balloons and then pop a balloon once every hour and complete the activity inside.
Ugly sweater party
This gives everyone has a chance to be creative and see what others come up with.
You could either purchase a new sweate, knit one if you’re handy with yarn, or you could buy a cheap, plain sweater and then add to it. You might attach battery operated lights, tinsel and/or ornaments. Consider trying to make your sweater look like a tree or reindeer. Remember, the tackier, the better.
To plan a Secret Santa party, you’ll need a bit of time. Start organizing soon. Get your group of friends together and draw names. During the week leading up to the party, have everyone find discreet ways to deliver their gifts without the other person knowing. You might opt to give one another smaller gifts throughout the week.
You will want to set minimum and maximum spending amounts and a specific number of gifts to give each other.
This will lead to lots of excitement leading up to the party, where the biggest gifts will be given. Each person will be anxious to figure out who drew his or her name. Have some other party games ready to keep the fun going.
If Secret Santa isn’t the route you want to take, consider a white elephant or new gift exchange. If you go with a white elephant, have everyone find items they no longer want. These can be gag gifts that are for laughs. Or, have everyone bring a store-bought gift.
Either way, put the gifts in a pile, and take turns picking and opening their gifts. People can opt to steal presents or to open new ones.

Sweaters Delivered by Amazon Drones? December 02 2013
Is this the future of Ugly Christmas Sweater delivery?
After watching that incredible interview with Jeff Bazos (Founder and CEO of Amazon.com) on 60 Minutes last night (Sunday, December 1, 2013) I had visions of sugar plums dancing through my head and Ugly Christmas Sweaters being delivered via Amazon drones! How awesome would that be? Too creepy? He mentioned that 80% of their orders weigh under 5 pounds, which is about 2 or 3 Ugly Sweaters; sounds like the average order to me!

Blake Griffin and Chris Paul Wear Ugly Christmas Sweaters November 08 2013
Who's the biggest fan of Ugly Christmas Sweaters? Well, one could make the argument that Blake Griffin - who is 6 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs in at 215 pounds - would likely be a top candidate! This video of Blake and Chris Paul - teammate on the L.A. Clippers, shows just how much they love the spectacle, the marvel and grimace of tacky and festive holiday sweaters!
Things Got Ugly on Fox & Friends June 03 2013
Well, it's officially become another holiday tradition, as "Team Ugly", Adam, Kevin and myself made our fourth consecutive appearance on Fox & Friends this weekend, but with a twist - things got ugly LIVE in their New York studios! This was our first time visiting their NYC studios, as we have traditionally just done a satellite feed from Chicago, so it was up close, in person and even more UGLY!
There's nothing more exciting this time of year than to see hundreds of thousands of people from all over the globe come to view the Christmas decorations and lights in New York City! The highlight was seeing the Christmas tree lit up at 30 Rockefeller Plaza - simply amazing! Certainly motivated us to make this season of ugly Christmas sweaters the best yet!
If you missed our segment, be sure to check out the replay below, as we were honored to help kick off the StandUp2Cancer (SU2C) new campaign called "Hey Cancer It's Gonna Get Ugly!" - Not only are we excited to announce and promote the campaign, but we've also decided to participate and set the goal to raise $10,000 this December!

USA Today - Pop Candy Blog December 09 2012
A special thanks to our friends over at USA Today and the Pop Candy Blog's guest writer Eric Greenburg for the shout out this week!
To be mentioned in the same blog that highlights both Ben Savage and Jimmy Fallon - two of my favorite excuses for watching TV - it just doesn't seem like it can get much better :D
Eric's blog Just My Show is pretty awesome and features some of our great retro gems worth celebrating!
Nobody needs an intro to our pal Jimmy Fallon, but how about a reminder to check out his annual "12 Days of Ugly Christmas Sweaters" - gee Jimmy...if only WE knew who gave your writers that idea (hint, hint, hint).
Good Morning America! (GMA) Ugly Christmas Sweater Fashion Show December 08 2012
So I never thought I'd see the day when George Stephanopoulos and Sam Champion would be standing there in Times Square, live on national television wearing very festive and extremely ugly Christmas sweater, but wouldn't ya know it - there they were with the rest of the GMA crew this week as they held a live fashion show - err - ugly/fashion show, if that makes sense!
Anyhow, it was a good laugh to see the team not take themselves too seriously, in fact - a few really take their Ugly Christmas Sweater style VERY serious. We were lucky enough for Good Morning America and their guest reporter and contributing Style Editor at Lucky Magazine, Lori Bergamotto, to mention and show a few images of our book, "The Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book: The Definitive Guide to Getting Your Ugly On"
So much fun this time of year to see EVERYONE get into the festive mood!

The Washington Post: The Art Post Knows Ugly November 29 2011
Our pals over at The Washington Post offered up a nice look at how the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party started...who started this party?
Honestly, when was the last time a new holiday tradition was born? :)
The ugly holiday sweater you owned when you were child was embarrassing and itchy. Today, it’s still embarrassing and itchy, but it’s also a beloved holiday cultural phenomenon, in the form of an Ugly Holiday Sweater Party. For at least 10 years, grown adults have been trotting up light-up Rudolph sweaters, or hand-knitted Christmas tree abominations for laughs. Who do we have to thank — or blame?
Ugly Christmas sweaters hit the runway in the Dolce and Gabbana fall collection. (Maria Valentino)
The actual mass-market ugly sweater reached its peak popularity sometime in the 1980s, according to the Wall Street Journal. That’s when people wore the sweaters in earnest, supposedly.
The sarcasm may be thanks to a 2001 party trend from Vancouver, Canada. At least, that’s according to the three men who wrote “Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book: The Definitive Guide to Getting Your Ugly On.” Authors Brian Miller, Adam Paulson and Kevin Wool hedge that claim, saying the world will never be sure who held the first ugly sweater party. They also manage to squeeze out 152 pages of advice on throwing a party with instructions that can be summed up in one sentence: “Tell your guests to wear ugly holiday sweaters.”
Since that time, ugly sweater parties have earned a much-desired place on the list of Stuff White People Like in 2008, where author Christian Lander wrote that one of the greatest difficulties of preparing for an ugly sweater party is finding an appropriately tacky sweater: “If you find yourself invited to one of these parties, you must begin your preparations immediately. Craftier white people have been searching used clothing stores since last Christmas, and so you should not expect to find anything of significant ironic value.”
No need to worry about that — the authors of the party guide have also set up an online shop for ugly Christmas sweaters, offering poinsettias, snowflakes and Santas galore, all for $24.
Companies like Caribou Coffee have jumped on the ugly sweater bandwagon too, with Caribou’s sweater maker: Users can design their own ugly sweater on Facebook, and Caribou will give a sweater to the needy for each one designed. It takes the irony-imbued trend back to its roots: Celebrating the holiday with earnestness, giving, and warmth.
That earnestness may be making its way back full circle. The one part nostalgia, one part hipster mockery has popped up on runways and into mainstream fashion with Fair Isle styles, like this $600 reindeer sweater.
Are you headed to an ugly sweater party this holiday season? Be sure to send us photos of your cringe-worthy polyester-blend bedazzled embarrassments. Upload images of your ugly holiday sweaters here, and we’ll be sure to feature the best — or worst.
