Simple Machine Science for Kids: Launching Ping Pong Ball Snowmen by Buggy and Buddy

Whenever I  invite my kids to participate in science experiments, my main goal is NOT to make sure they master a set concept, but simply to allow them to explore the activity in their own way. Giving this freedom to children inspires them to make predictions and critically think about the world around them in a pressure-free setting.

We don’t really get snow in our neck of the woods so we have to create our own imaginary snow activities~ like our indoor snowy toy car ramp, or like this activity- launching ping pong ball snowmen!

Ping Pong Ball Snowmen

Materials for Launching Ping Pong Ball Snowmen

  • Ping pong balls (Optional: Draw snowmen faces on the ping pong balls with Sharpiesto make this science activity winter themed!)
  • Wooden yardstick
  • Something to use as a fulcrum (Examples: coffee can, large wooden toy block, a log, or a brick )
  • Small plastic cup
  • Strong tape (like packing tape or masking tape)
  • An open space to do the activity (like your yard or a nearby park)
  • Optional: Paper and pencil for science journaling

Procedure

1. Tape a plastic cup to one end of the yardstick. (We started off with just a few pieces of tape, but soon realized we needed to add quite a bit more to keep the cup from flying off the yardstick. Really tape that baby down with some strong tape.)

Building a lever from a yardstick

2. Grab your ping pong ball snowmen, your yardstick (with cup attached) and whatever you’re using as the fulcrum (in our case a coffee can) and head outside. Find an open space (like your yard) to set up your activity.

2. Place the yardstick over the coffee can (or whatever item you’ve found to use as the fulcrum).

3. Put a ping pong ball snowman into the cup.

4. Give the snowman a little pep talk before his launch.

4. Push down on the opposite end of the yardstick quickly (with either your hand or foot) and observe what happens to the ping pong ball.

5. Allow plenty of time for children to explore launching the ping pong balls. Optional: Encourage children to record what they are noticing in their science journals. Younger children can illustrate what is happening with simple pictures.

6. Depending on the age and interest of your child, introduce the terms lever and fulcrum. (A lever is basically a stick or rod that uses a pivot point or fulcrum to move something. In this case the yardstick is the lever, the coffee can is the fulcrum, and the lever is moving the ping pong ball.)

7. Invite your child to observe what happens to the ping pong ball when changing the position of the fulcrum. Older children can use the markings on the yardstick to record the location of the fulcrum in their science journal and how each location affects the distance the ping pong ball travels.

This activity can be a great learning experience for any age! Theo at 2 years old had a blast launching his ping pong ball snowman! He felt proud being able to set up the activity on his own and gained experience with cause and effect.

Lucy, age 5, was determined to see how she could set the lever up to get the ball to go the furthest by changing the location of the fulcrum after each launch. And she was very excited to find out what would happen when she launched lots of snowmen at once. She made all kinds of predictions as she explored our lever activity!

Want to Go Even Further?

Related activities to extend the learning for various ages.

  • Play on a seesaw at your local playground. How is the seesaw the same and different as your ball launching lever? Do you think the seesaw is a lever? Why or why not?
  • Where do you see levers being used in your everyday life? (Some examples: scissors, seesaw, pliers)
  • Go online or to the library and research first class, second class, and third class levers.
  • Design and build a smaller version of the lever we made today.

How To: Build the Perfect Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Photo Booth December 10 2012

Hi! I am Rachel, a huge fan of ugly sweaters and parties, and I am excited to be a guest blogger today for Team Ugly!

This is me, wearing my sweater from Ugly Christmas Sweater Party + showing off my autographed copy of their book. Yup, huge fan!

My husband Troy and I just hosted our 2nd annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party last weekend, and I am here to share how I made this DIY photo booth. It was the perfect addition to our party this year!

Supplies:
  • Friend(s) with cool tools: Jigsaw, Electric Screwdriver, Staple Gun, Screws
  • Large piece of plywood
  • Two (2) large picture frames
  • Wrapping paper
  • Wood glue
  • Adhesive glue
  • Mod podge (opt)
  • Random holiday decorations

1. Start with your large piece of plywood. Mine is about 6 feet by 4 feet. Cut 2 skinny pieces of wood down to 6 feet, and screwed into the long edges of the plywood for support.

2. Next, we positioned the frames on the wood and traced the inside edge with a pencil. Then we cut along the pencil marks with a jigsaw. That was the hardest part, and the part where we were laughing the most. I had a 16x20 and an 11x14 frame on hand. The 11x14 was a bit snug for taking pictures, but it was free so we made it work.

3. After our frame openings worked with our frames, we were ready to cover the wood with wrapping paper. I would totally recommend using the cellophane type that doesn't rip easily. But all I had was the paper kind, so that's what we used. We used spray adhesive to adhere it to the wood.

4. Once our paper was on, we cut an X shape where the frames go, and folded and taped the excess paper to the back.

5. Then it was time to attach the frames. We glued them into place with wood glue, on the front. Once that was dry, we flipped the plywood over, and screwed the frames in.

6. After all of that, I applied a layer of mod podge to coat the wrapping paper. I'd like to use this again next year, so hopefully that will help preserve it.

7. For the decorations, I stapled a garland around the top edge. Then I added a string of colored lights (because colored lights are the bomb). I had some yarn wrapped ornaments, knit covered ornaments, and felted wool ornaments, that I added to the garland, with twisty ties. Below, I taped some tinsel and stapled my knitted stockings!

Ta da! You are ready for your Ugly Christmas Sweater Party! Our friends used their smartphones to take pictures, and I also had my camera near by for anyone who wanted to use it.

Come check out my other Ugly Christmas Sweater Party details... from my hot glue snowflakes, to my pom pom trees, to my ugly sweater wood blocks. You can also find my 2012 recap, and 2011 recap for lots more ideas!

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book - Release and Signing Party November 13 2011

Team Ugly invites you (yes, we mean you) to attend our book release and signing party this Friday, November 18, 2011 at The Indiana Welcome Center.

We are thrilled to meet you all and sign copies of our recently released (and soon to be famous) book "Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book: The Definitive Guide to Getting Your Ugly On" (Abrams Image, 2011).  The event will be extra special as it will take place along side the annual A Christmas Story Comes Home event, featuring the film scenes from "A Christmas Story", which is very cool.  And if that's not fun enough, you and the kids can slide down Santa's Mountain - just like Ralphie did after he asked for a Red Ryder carbine-action, two hundred shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and a thing which tells time.

The event will be from 6PM-8PM at The Indiana Welcome Center (7770 Corrine Drive - Hammond, IN)

Bring the kids.  Or don't.  Bring a copy of our book.  Or don't...we'll have some there available for purchase.  Wear an Ugly Christmas Sweater. Or don't...but you won't be as cool as everyone else.  We look forward to seeing you there!

We've our Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book page to help you find the best pre-order prices, and we would love to have you order a few copies and make this book the "Official Christmas Gift of 2011" ...we'll also accept "Stocking Stuffer of 2011"

Tis the Season for Updates July 26 2011

One of our biggest goals for the upcoming holiday season was to make our website much more user friendly.  We're happy to announce that the "Buy Ugly Sweaters" page now has two new features.

Larger Preview Images - You can now take a closer look at the Ugly Christmas Sweaters by clicking on the thumbnail to enlarge.  We've always tried to give you a good discription of how Ugly the sweaters were, but now you can see for yourself!Real Time Inventory  - Understandably so, when fresh pieces of Ugly arrive on the site, there tends to be a rush to the checkout, which in the past led to a few occasions where the item was "double booked".  We're happy to announce that improved inventory controls will now provide an "Out of Stock" message for a much better shopping experience. We are also working on a few fun projects this season, which we'll share more details on as we get closer to the holiday.  Look for contests announcements soon!

Cheers,Team Ugly

Out with the Old, In with the New July 26 2011

Last season the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party website enjoyed huge growth, as media outlets like CNN, MSNBC and newspaper websites across the county covered this slightly new and very popular holiday tradition.
My goal over the next few months is to travel near and far to gather up a fresh batch of Ugly Christmas Sweaters; featuring the most awful designs, patterns, actual Christmas tree lights that light up, etc.
If you happen to still have your ugly sweater from this past holiday season and you'd like to advertise it on my site, please feel free to contact me, using the links below.

Thanks!

The Launch of Ugly Christmas Sweater Party July 26 2011

Well, I'm not at the "perfect" stage, but "good enough" is okay for now.

My main concern is getting the word out that there is a site dedicated to Ugly Christmas Sweaters and of course the parties that we all love to show up to wearing our Sunday's worst.

So what do you think? Can a site created for buyers and sellers of ugly Christmas sweaters actually work?  I hope so....how hillarious would it be if this thing took off??

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
