Most of the year, we laugh at them. We hide them. We don’t dare wear them.
But this year, the time-honored tradition of the Ugly Christmas Sweater is the inspiration for the City of Lakewood’s annual Jingle Bell Rock 5K.
Warm up your holiday spirit with the whole family – even pets – on Dec. 6 at Lakewood City Hall. Dress for the weather, as this 5K will run, rain or shine.
Participants who register for the race this Friday will pay a discounted rate of $20 – a $5 savings off the regular price!
It’s going to be another cold one, so remember to rock your favorite ugly Christmas sweater to keep in the body heat and express your holiday sense of humor. The best way to celebrate this ridiculous but beloved holiday tradition? With hundreds of other people, of course.
So dig out that old sweater that you haven’t donned since the Christmas your grandparents gave it to you. Better yet, get together with your friends and decorate your own holiday fashion disaster, er, masterpiece, and wear it on the day of the 5K.
The City’s annual holiday run (you can walk or jog too) is a partnership with the community and a way to bring the residents of Lakewood together. As in years past, St. Clare Hospital is a presenting sponsor of the Jingle Bell Rock 5K. This year, the Lakewood hospital is joined by sponsor Drangsholt Orthodontics. Last year’s attendees might remember Drangsholt Orthodontics’ water stop, where runners could grab some refreshments and a free jingle bell.
“It’s about everyone out there having fun in their Christmas sweaters,” said Arielle Carney, Lakewood Parks and Recreation Coordinator. “What screams ‘Holiday Fun’ more than that?”

About Team Ugly
Brian Miller, Adam Paulson and Kevin Wool - better known as "Team Ugly" are three college friends turned business partners and owners of www.UglyChristmasSweaterParty.com the online mega store opened in 2009 and is home to 10,000 Ugly, Vintage, Tacky and Festive Christmas Sweaters. Their big business that ships sweaters to all corners of the globe, even military battleships, is operated out of a small warehouse space in Crown Point, Indiana, about 30 minutes outside of Chicago.
The fad that has become a phenomenon voyages out into another season of pub crawls, office parties, fundraisers and good ole' fashion house parties!
"We're incredibly excited to continue our efforts to host the most fun and ugly Christmas sweater parties in the world, and at the same time, help a local organization that provides so much assistance to our surrounding community." said Brian Miller, Co-Owner and Founder of www.UglyChristmasSweaterParty.com
"This is the time of year that everyone wants to celebrate the holiday season, spend time with family and friends, but most importantly give thanks for what we have and share our blessings with those that could use a helping hand." added Wool.
"All of the food and monetary donations will be given to the Food Bank of NWI, and what's really incredible is that their organization can feed five meals for every $1.00 donated! We're going to have a great time and help our community in a big way!" mentioned Paulson.
More about the Food Bank of NWISince its inception in 1982, the Food Bank of NWI has distributed more than 100 million pounds of food. We supply food to more than 110 agencies who serve the poor, children, elderly, or people in crisis.
Last year more than 5.1 million pounds of food were distributed to agencies serving those in need with enough food to feed more than 10,000 people each week. The Food Bank’s administrative and fundraising costs are only 3%. This means that 97 cents out of every dollar donated goes back to provide food to those in need.

About Red Letter Days
St. Louis-based siblings, Katie and Willy McKenna ventured onto the national music scene with their band, Red Letter Days, and with release of its first EP "Sounds Like a Plan." The strong female fronted band, Red Letter Days, continues to grow their fan base with a catchy, hook driven, rock sound blended with high-energy upbeat, pop-punk style. Alex Bolano joined the band in 2011 as their lead guitarist.
Honoring the “family-band” concept the McKennas naturally fall into, the duo chose Red Letter Days as a homage to their late grandfather who, “ . . . kept a daily journal, in which days that were special to him were marked as 'Red Letter Days." For more information, visit www.RedLetterDaysBand.com.

]]>Each week day in November, we like to reward our Facebook fans by offering up the "Name It to Win It' contest, in which the funniest sweater name offered is chosen and the fan receives their choice of an Ugly Christmas Sweater.
Here's a great example from November
This is the best place to purchase ugly tacky vintage and festive Christmas sweaters and jumpers!]]>With 30 pre-registered participants of all ages, the first Ugly Christmas Sweater Run/Walk is promising to be an inclusive fun-for-all community event.
Organizers Angela Andrews, a Dysart recreation pilot program steering committee member, and Andrea Mueller, the municipal recreation pilot project co-ordinator, invite participants to come with their tackiest, most hideous, craziest sweater and manliest moustache (fake or real), including Santa hats and Christmas decorations.
Mueller said the five-kilometre run/walk around Head Lake is all about participation for everyone.
“There might not be prizes for the fastest runner, but there will definitely be prizes for the tackiest sweater,” Mueller said. “We’re not sure if we’ll have [a prize] for the fastest runner. It’s more about getting out and who has the most cheer and spirit.”
Andrews said the idea for the event came from her desire to participate in an ugly sweater run. Instead of going out of town to one she thought she would organize a local one.
“It really fit in with the Santa Claus parades that are going on. There’s nothing really happening in November to get people active and outdoors,” Andrews said.
After the run/walk portion, the organizers invite everyone to the Dysart Library for hot chocolate, cookies, Santa Claus and a photo area for people to take photos with props.
“The whole idea is to get anybody of all ages and all abilities out being active because it is free recreation,” Andrews said.
Although the pair encourages everyone to participate, spectators are not only welcome to line the route to cheer, but encouraged to bring bells, adding to the seasonal feel.
For more information contact Mueller at amueller@dysartetal.ca or call 705-457-1740 and leave a message on Tamara Wilbee’s voicemail.
